The Emir of Gwoza in Borno State, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, confirmed yesterday that several suicide bombings took place in Gwoza town, including at a wedding reception and a burial ceremony. These coordinated attacks, which happened in the afternoon, caused chaos as people fled for safety.
Sources reported that over 30 people were killed, and more than 100 were injured, with many victims taken to Maiduguri for medical treatment. Emir Timta said the community is in mourning due to these tragic events.
The first attack was carried out by a woman who, along with two children, infiltrated a wedding reception and detonated her explosives, killing herself and many others. Shortly after, another bomber attacked a nearby burial ceremony, and a third explosion occurred minutes later, resulting in more casualties. Over 100 people were injured, and those with serious injuries were transported to Maiduguri for medical care.
This is a preliminary report, and the full details are still unknown, but updates will be provided as they become available.
Ahmed Usman Jaha, a member of the federal constituency, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the souls of the deceased, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
Gwoza, located in southern Borno near the Cameroon border, was previously declared Boko Haram Territory after insurgents captured it and killed hundreds of people before it was eventually liberated by troops.
