Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State is dead.
He was reportedly breathe his last on Wednesday in Lagos, according to a source.
Akeredolu for almost a year has been battling with leukemia, a cancer of the blood, which took him to Germany, to seek medical attention.
He returned from medical leave in September and stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, from where he was tried to direct affairs of Ondo state.
This incident drew serious ire and public outrage. Residents of the state, including opposition parties, civil society organisations, stakeholders came out to denounce the situation, and urged for transfer of power to the deputy governor.
On December 13, he proceeded on another medical leave and wrote a notice formally transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa who later assumed the responsibilities of the governor in full acting capacity.
By this development, Akeredolu has become the first governor of Ondo state to die on service.
The acting governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa is expected to be sworn in as substantive governor immediately.
