ANUA 2023 Conference: Hon. Misau Tasks Alumni Associations On  Quality Education

The critical roles expected of Alumni Associations in enhancing quality university education were emphasised by participants during the third quarterly conference of the Association of Nigeria University Alumni held at the Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja on Saturday, October 21, 2023.

Speaking on the topic titled, “The Role of Alumni Associations as Stakeholders In Enhancing Quality University Education In Nigeria”, the Guest Speaker, Hon. Aliyu Bappa Misau FCNA,  told the gathering that forming alumni association is not only to give back to their Alma maters but also to ensure quality education are provided for students in campuses.

Misau, who is the Deputy Chairman House Committee on TETFUND and other services in his remarks, stated, “The primary essence of forming alumni association is not only to give back or source resources for the development of the University or Collage alone but play a pivotal role to the provision of education and make significant impact on the educational system.

He added that “Alumni association helps in uniting the students of the university or college wherever they are and serve as an avenue to come back to the campus for a re-union where all the university or college alumni and students will engage one another in fostering a lifelong intellectual and emotional connections between the university or college and its global alumni community so as to provide the university or college with goodwill and support.

The lawmaker, also outlined certain responsibilities the Alumni associations, ought to play in improving quality education in Nigeria.

These according to him include funding infrastructure, providing scholarship to indigent students, providing platform for networking and mentoring opportunities.

Hon. Misau further stated that Alumni associations can also organise lectures and workshops to share their knowledge and experiences with students and faculty members.

According to him, “Alumni associations often play a significant role in career guidance and placement services.

“Alumni associations can advocate for policies and reforms that promote quality education in Nigeria. They can engage with government bodies, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to address issues such as curriculum development, teaching standards, and educational infrastructure.

“Alumni associations can support research and development initiatives in collaboration with educational institutions. By providing funding, resources, and expertise, alumni can contribute to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in various academic disciplines.

The lawmaker called on participants to start laying strong foundations so as to become truly world class in no distant future.

Misau believed that Alumni Associations in Nigeria, through their collective efforts, can contribute to the holistic development of students, improve educational infrastructure, enhance career prospects, and advocate for positive changes in the educational system.
