The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, met with senior electoral officers on Friday to review the 2023 general elections.
The meeting was held at the Abuja Continental Hotel and was attended by collation and returning officers across the country.
The collation and returning officers are mainly university professors, many of whom are vice-chancellors of universities.
The meeting is the third in a series of post-elections review meetings that INEC scheduled with those who played key roles in the elections.
The main objective of the meeting is to review the conduct of the elections and to identify areas where improvements can be made.
The meeting also took stock of how the electoral officers, who served as field supervisors, carried out their assignments.
The meeting is also attended by INEC’s National Commissioners and other senior staff.
The 2023 general elections to many Nigerians was the worst conducted exercise by INEC since 1999.
The recent European Union Observers Report slammed the commission on its inability to follow the electoral law guidelines during the elections.
Many civil society organisations, and opposition political parties on their parts, have been calling for the removal of the INEC chairman, but seems Tinubu’s administration is not ready to yield to that Clarion call at least for now
