JUST IN: Akpabio Defeats Yari, Elected New Senate President

Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged the new President of the Senate.
He defeated Senator Abdul’aziz Yari to emerge the new Senate President on Tuesday.
The former Akwa Ibom governor was returned elected as President of the 10th Senate after scoring 63 votes defeating Senator Yari who scored 46 votes.

Akpabio, is the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress, and President Bola Tinubu.

The programme for the day which was originally scheduled to start at 10 a.m., commenced as early as 8.45 am.

After the Clerk of the National Assembly called for nominations, the senator-elect for Borno South, Ali Ndume, nominated Godswill Akpabio, senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North-East, as President of the Senate. Akpabio accepted the nomination; while Elisha Abbo, senator-elect for Adamawa North, nominated Abdulaziz Yari, senator-elect for Zamfara West.

After his nomination, some senators protested that Yari was not qualified to stand for the position as a first-time senator.

After the lawmakers cast their votes in alphabetical order, two representatives of each team came to count their votes.

Senators Adeola Solomon and Ndume came out to represent Senator Akpabio, while Abbo and the senator-elect representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim, represented Senator Yari.

The voting ended at 9.15 am and Akpabio was sworn in at 9.44 am.
