The interventions, which underscore the growing relationship between the Imo diaspora community in Tampa Bay, USA and the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, were unveiled at separate but complementary events within the Institution.

While the scholarship awards took place at the Council Chamber, the newly donated stage was officially handed over and commissioned in front of the Rector’s Building, providing the Polytechnic with a dedicated facility for students’ social and institutional events
.
The Principal Officers of the Polytechnic present at the occasion included the Rector, Dr. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe, represented by the Deputy Rector, Academic, Dr. Obinna Iwueke; the Registrar, Mr. Stanley Ugochukwu Njoku; the Bursar, Mrs. Chinyere Adanne Ojiuko, represented by Mrs. Ijeoma Onyekwere; and the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Charles Obichere.

Also in attendance were Deans of Schools, Directors, staff members and the beneficiary students.

₦3 Million Scholarship Intervention
Presenting the scholarship awards on behalf of the Imo Community of Tampa Bay, USA, the President of the organisation, High Chief Emeka Eziakonwa, accompanied by Hon. Prince Chris Enweremadu, Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Agriculture, disclosed that the initiative represented the community’s third scholarship intervention at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

High Chief Eziakonwa expressed satisfaction with the impact of the partnership and emphasised the community’s desire to see the scholarship intervention reach more students in subsequent editions.
He noted that the community had continued to simplify the application process in order to make it easier for deserving students to benefit, while appreciating the Rector for granting the delegation an audience and creating the opportunity for the community to contribute meaningfully to student development.

The ₦100,000 awarded to each of the 30 beneficiaries, he said, was intended to provide practical financial relief to students at a time when the cost of education and general living expenses continues to place considerable pressure on families.

A Stage Built Around Student Welfare
The second major intervention emerged from a need identified by the Institution itself. According to the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Saint Paul Christopher , discussions with the benefactor following an earlier scholarship presentation revealed the need for a suitable venue and stage where students could organise social and developmental activities within the Polytechnic. The request was subsequently made for the provision of a permanent stage that would support students’ events on campus and reduce their exposure to avoidable risks associated with organising celebrations and social programmes outside the Institution.

High Chief Emeka Eziakonwa responded positively to the request, culminating in the donation of the stage, valued at over ₦15 million. The facility is therefore more than a physical structure; it represents a deliberate investment in creating a safer, more organised and more functional campus environment for student activities.

Deputy Rector: “This Is More Than a Donation
Representing the Rector at the occasion, the Deputy Rector, Academic, Dr. Obinna Iwueke, expressed profound appreciation to the Imo Community of Tampa Bay for its sustained commitment to the welfare and development of students of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede.
He commended the community for the judicious use of the scholarship funds and described the intervention as a practical demonstration of what meaningful community–institution partnership can achieve.

Dr. Iwueke noted that the scholarships would provide significant relief to beneficiaries and their families, particularly against the backdrop of prevailing economic realities in the country. He emphasised that educational support of this nature goes beyond financial assistance, as it helps students remain focused on their studies and strengthens their confidence that society values their educational aspirations.

The Deputy Rector further described the donated stage as a strategic contribution to student welfare, observing that a conducive academic environment must also provide appropriate spaces for healthy social interaction, creativity, recreation and community building.

He encouraged the beneficiaries to justify the confidence reposed in them by the benefactor through academic commitment, responsible conduct and positive contributions to the Polytechnic community.

Dr. Iwueke also extended an invitation to Hon. Prince Chris Enweremadu to visit the Polytechnic at another convenient time as a prospective benefactor, stressing that the Institution remains open to mutually beneficial partnerships capable of advancing education and student development.

Responding, Hon. Prince Chris Enweremadu commended High Chief Emeka Eziakonwa for the initiative and expressed his willingness to explore opportunities to support the Polytechnic in the future.

Recognizing Those Who Serve Students
The event also introduced another significant dimension to the community’s intervention: the recognition of outstanding service to students. A cash award was presented to the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Saint Paul Christopher, in recognition of his contributions to student welfare and development. According to the organisers, this marks the beginning of an additional tradition through which the Imo Community of Tampa Bay intends to recognise a faculty member annually for exceptional service to students, alongside its scholarship programme.
The gesture adds a human dimension to the community’s philanthropic philosophy, recognising not only students who need support, but also those who dedicate themselves to improving students’ experiences and welfare.

A Partnership with a Future
The combined scholarship, infrastructure and recognition initiatives point to an emerging model of diaspora engagement in which philanthropy moves beyond one-off donations to become a sustained partnership with educational institutions.

For the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, the intervention provides immediate assistance to 30 students, a valuable social infrastructure for the wider student community and recognition for dedicated service.

For the Imo Community of Tampa Bay, the gesture reinforces its commitment to giving back to society and supporting educational development in its home community.

The occasion concluded with the formal handover and commissioning of the donated stage in front of the Rector’s Building. Receiving the facility on behalf of the Polytechnic, the Deputy Rector, Academic, Dr. Obinna Iwueke, expressed appreciation to High Chief Emeka Eziakonwa and the entire Imo Community of Tampa Bay for their continued support to the students and the Institution.

As the Federal Polytechnic Nekede continues to expand its commitment to student-centred development, the latest intervention from the Imo diaspora community in Tampa Bay stands as a compelling example of how education, philanthropy, diaspora engagement and institutional partnership can converge to create lasting impact.
