Prominent pro-democracy activist, Comrade Awa Bamiji, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come to his aid by facilitating advanced medical treatment or providing financial assistance to enable him continue his recovery from a stroke he suffered in 2024.
In a letter dated July 15, 2026 and addressed to the President, Bamiji said he has been battling the effects of a stroke since November 12, 2024, receiving treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. While expressing gratitude to God for preserving his life and acknowledging the progress made so far, he noted that his recovery remains incomplete.
According to the activist, he still requires intensive physiotherapy, speech therapy and continuous medication, adding that the cost of treatment has become overwhelming.
He disclosed that he is yet to regain normal speech, cannot walk long distances without difficulty and continues to experience severe tremors that make writing and the use of electronic devices extremely challenging.
Bamiji thanked several prominent Nigerians and friends who contributed towards his treatment, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Brigadier Tayo Koleoso, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale, Dr. Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora, Chief Wale Oshun, Adeyeye Adedayo and many other well-wishers. He also revealed that he sold his personal Audi vehicle to raise additional funds for his treatment.
Despite the support received, Bamiji said the donations had been largely exhausted on medical bills, medication, accommodation and other living expenses. He lamented that he still lives in rented accommodation and is facing severe financial hardship as he continues his rehabilitation.
The activist therefore appealed to President Tinubu to consider his request for specialised medical treatment overseas or any financial intervention that would enable him access the advanced healthcare needed for his full recovery. He expressed confidence in the President’s compassion and commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.
Describing himself as a lifelong pro-democracy activist and committed supporter of progressive politics, Bamiji prayed for God’s continued guidance, wisdom and good health for President Tinubu, while expressing hope that his appeal would receive favourable consideration.
Copies of the letter were also sent to Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka; elder statesman, Prince Tajudeen Olusi; and Otunba Jumoke Ogunkeyede (JMK).
