From the studios of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, to the global spotlight of the Luxembourg Art Prize, Dumbor Kemgbara Debeeh stands as living proof that when institutional vision meets creative discipline, greatness emerges.

When the Luxembourg Art Prize, an internationally respected artistic recognition organized by the Pinacothèque in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, announced its latest honourees for outstanding portfolio quality, the applause echoed far beyond Europe. It resonated powerfully in Owerri, at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, the alma mater that helped mould the artistic voice of Dumbor Kemgbara Debeeh.

A proud graduate of the Department of Arts and Design, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Debeeh’s journey from the lecture halls and studios of Nekede to global artistic relevance is a compelling story of institutional excellence, visionary leadership, and inspired mentorship.

Established to discover and promote artistic talents worldwide regardless of age or nationality, the Luxembourg Art Prize has, since 2015, become a credible international reference for artists. Each year, only 24 finalists are selected, with three laureates chosen by an independent jury from thousands of global submissions spanning painting, sculpture, photography, installation, mixed media, and decorative arts. To be recognized for the outstanding quality of a portfolio is to be affirmed as an artist of international promise.

That affirmation bears the unmistakable fingerprints of Federal Polytechnic Nekede’s Department of Arts and Design, a department renowned for its hands-on pedagogy, technical rigor, and insistence on originality. It was within this creative ecosystem that Debeeh, an HND graduate (Morning Programme, Class of 2018 and graduated in 2021), refined his craft, sharpened his visual language, and learned to tell stories that transcend geography.

Equally significant is the role of Mr. Samuel Palmtree Ifeanyichukwu, Lecturer in Art and Design Technology, mentor, and coach to Debeeh. His commitment to nurturing creative confidence and professional discipline exemplifies the department’s culture of mentorship, one that does not merely train artists but prepares them for global relevance.

Towering above this success story is the quiet but powerful influence of the institution’s leadership. Under the stewardship of the Rector, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe, Federal Polytechnic Nekede has continued to witness a renaissance of academic excellence and creative output. Widely admired for her transformational leadership style, Dr. Igbokwe’s “magic wand” has been at work, strengthening academic standards, empowering departments, and creating an environment where talents can thrive and shine beyond Nigeria’s borders.

For Debeeh, now internationally recognized and proudly tracing his roots to Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, this honour is more than personal triumph. It is a testament to what is possible when a federal institution commits itself to quality, vision, and purpose-driven education.

As the global art world takes notice of his work, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, and its Department of Arts and Design take a well-deserved bow, having once again proven that world-class talent can, and does, emerge from Nigerian public institutions.

Nekede trained him. The world applauds him. Leadership made it possible.
