Ibadan Children’s Funfair Tragedy: Hon. Segelu Sympathizes With Bereaved Families, Calls For Safety Measures

The Chairman/CEO of YSEG Hotels and Suites Ibadan and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Hon. Olayinka Oladimeji Segelu, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred at the Ibadan Children’s Funfair.

The incident, which took place at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, claimed the lives of 35 children and left several others injured.

In a statement released on Friday, Hon. Segelu extended his sympathies to the Oyo State Government, Governor Seyi Makinde, the event organizers, and the grieving families. He described the stampede as a deeply saddening and unfortunate incident.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the children’s funfair, which resulted in the loss of young lives and left many injured. My heart goes out to the bereaved families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time. I also wish a swift recovery to those injured,” he said.

The funfair was organized by Agidigbo Radio, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat, in collaboration with Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS), an initiative led by Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi, a former queen at the Ooni’s Palace.

Hon. Segelu commended the Oyo State Government for working with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident and provide support to those affected.

However, he urged the government and security agencies to establish stringent guidelines for public events to ensure the safety of attendees and prevent future occurrences.

“The safety of attendees must always come first in the planning of public events. I encourage the Oyo State Government and security agencies to develop clear safety protocols for such gatherings. This will help avert future tragedies,” he added.

Hon. Segelu, a PDP governorship aspirant for the 2027 election in Oyo State, reiterated his condolences, saying, “May the families of the victims find the strength and comfort to navigate through this tragic time. My thoughts and prayers are with them.”

The tragic incident has left the Ibadan community in shock and mourning, with calls for increased safety measures at public events gaining momentum.
