Rema Credits ‘Calm Down’ For Pioneering International Afrobeats Recognition, Positions Himself Among The Big 4

Popular Nigerian singer Rema has claimed that his global hit, ‘Calm Down,’ played a crucial role in the introduction of Afrobeats categories at major international award shows.

During his appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ Rema affirmed that he stands alongside Afrobeats heavyweights Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

“I’m not trying to present myself as the Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I wait for the legends to acknowledge it, but since no one has, I’ll say it myself,” he remarked.

“Respect to the OGs, but yes, I’m one of the Big 4. The success of my song has opened doors, leading to major award shows recognizing Afrobeats with a dedicated category.”

It’s worth noting that last year, the MTV Video Music Awards introduced a Best Afrobeats Song category, with Rema’s ‘Calm Down Remix’ featuring Selena Gomez winning the inaugural award.
