Cardinal Onaiyekan Urges Nigerian Youth To Lead Change, Calls For Genuine Leadership Engagement

As the world commemorated International Youth Day last week, calls for reform have resonated strongly, with a renewed focus on the role of Nigeria’s young people in shaping the nation’s future.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Vanguard, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja and a respected figure in Nigeria, shared his insights on the pivotal role of youth in driving change and the crucial responsibilities of the country’s leaders in empowering them.

With his extensive experience and deep understanding of Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, Cardinal Onaiyekan highlighted the potential of the country’s youth as a force for peace and development.

He praised the efforts of young Nigerians who are actively working towards these goals, urging them to continue on this path by drawing on their religious values.

However, the Cardinal did not shy away from criticising the current leadership for failing to adequately engage with the nation’s youth.

He pointed out that despite young people’s eagerness to contribute to the nation’s progress, they have not been given the attention, space, or encouragement they deserve.

“Young people want to participate and contribute to the peace and development of the nation, but they have not been given adequate attention, space, or encouragement by those in control,” he noted.

Cardinal Onaiyekan also addressed the government’s frequent calls for patience from the youth, warning that this approach could backfire.

He argued that young people should not be passive but should instead actively pursue the changes needed to improve the country.

“Young people cannot and should not be patient. They should show their eagerness to bring about change and improve the country. They have always been at the forefront of change throughout history,” he asserted.

Looking ahead, Cardinal Onaiyekan offered a roadmap for Nigeria’s leadership to better engage with its young population.

He stated the importance of recognising the natural desire of young people to achieve their destiny and called on leaders to create an environment where they can work, succeed, and have their voices heard.

The Cardinal also expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of current government programs aimed at addressing youth concerns.

He highlighted the widespread perception among young Nigerians that these initiatives are more about tokenism than genuine efforts to create opportunities.

“Many young people say they have never seen these programmes. We need sincerity and avenues for young people to succeed, not just token efforts like distributing 50,000 naira,” he commented.

Furthermore, Cardinal Onaiyekan questioned whether short-term solutions, such as the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, would truly address the underlying issues causing unrest among the youth.

He urged the government to focus on long-term strategies, including harnessing the country’s natural resources like gas, to generate energy and create sustainable opportunities for the younger generation.

Cardinal Onaiyekan also reiterated the need for sincere leadership that genuinely engages with the youth and harnesses their potential for the nation’s development.
