EFCC’s “X” Account Vanishes Amid Cyber Threats from Yahoo Boys, Agency Cites Network Issues

The official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has mysteriously disappeared, leading to widespread speculation.

The account, which had 2.2 million followers, displayed the message “This account doesn’t exist” when checked by Peoples Gazette.

Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s chief spokesman, attributed the issue to a network problem, stating that the agency’s ICT department had been working on restoring the account for three days.

The disappearance follows threats of cyber warfare from a group of suspected Internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo Boys, who accused the EFCC of constitutional violations and extortion.

These threats, made on forums like Reddit, came in response to the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on online fraud, which has included controversial midnight raids.

Despite the threats, it remains unclear whether the handle’s disappearance was a result of the cyber threats, a sanction from X, or a deactivation by the agency.
